Split Braider

In this case, we designed and built customized machines to support a prototype jet engine development project.

Our client’s engineers were working on a new engine design and specified a braided composite ring for an internal component. The ring required significantly more strength in one defined area to accomplish their performance requirements. They wanted a means to add that local strength, while optimizing for weight and form factor on the whole component.

Working closely with their design team, Gallagher created a split braiding process and tackifier system that allowed the carbon fiber circular preform to be removed from the braiding machine, and processed with a tackifier to add strength where needed, and then returned to the braider for completion.
