Blades, Bridges, and More

A company developing a composite product to replace balsa wood cores in wind turbine blades engaged Gallagher to help them transform their proof-of-concept prototypes into a rugged full-scale production system.

The results: an integrated and mostly automated foam winding line. Long rectangular sections of closed cell rigid foam are drawn through the line, wrapped with fibers, then finished through other processes.

In addition to wind turbine blades, the end product becomes a building block for composite sandwich panels that are stronger, lighter and more durable than steel. Current uses include bridge decking, shipping containers, structural panels for buses, truck-trailers and railroad cars, among others.
