Automated Packaging System

SmartPak created and leads the market for custom pre-packaged daily supplements delivered to horses across North America. The company stocks nearly 300 different supplements supporting equine health. Many horses take multiple supplements, twice a day, and SmartPak creates customized “peel and pour” packs specifically dosed for every horse.

SmartPak’s steady growth in the early 2000s pushed its packaging system to the limits. They engaged Gallagher to evaluate their processes and create a new automated system that could accommodate their growth and improve reliability.

The result is a customized system, with several proprietary processes that give SmartPak a competitive advantage. The system prints the horse’s name on each pack, and the contents of each well within that pack. The packs are trimmed, bundled, and shrink-wrapped ready to be boxed and delivered.

The Gallagher system increased SmartPak’s packaging capacity by more than 700%. What used to take three shifts to accomplish, is now done in one shift. The company has since added two additional Gallagher lines to keep pace with their growth.

“These machines are complex and impressive,” said Kevin Wilson, production manager at SmartPak. “All we do is scan a bar code, load the trays in one end, and the machine does the rest. And they are as reliable as the day is long.”
