Braider for Airborne Weapon

In support of an airborne weapons system, Gallagher was engaged to design and build a braider to produce a structural component of the weapon.

We built this 144-carrier braider configured with a mandrel handling system that has four axes of motion.  As the preform passes back and forth through the center of the braider, the mandrel handlers on either side move vertically and horizontally according to the contours of part being made.

Our customized control system maintains the proper speed and angle of braid, while ensuring the part is always on the center line. The process makes two parts on one mandrel. The completed preform is then cut on the center line, and each half is run through a resin transfer molding (RTM) process.
