Mobile Factory Makes Miles of Composite Pipe

There are 2.8 million miles of pipeline in the United States transporting oil and gas, much of it older steel pipe now operating beyond its design life. Smartpipe Technologies developed a composite system to re-line those old pipes in place, without disturbing the built environment.

Gallagher was engaged as a partner in the design and development of the Smartpipe manufacturing system and its innovative mobile factory that can be deployed in the field to make new pipe in place.

Working with the Smartpipe engineering team, Gallagher designed and built customized winders, wrappers, and c-formers that enable manufacturing in the field and pulling miles of the new composite pipe at a time through the existing pipeline.

Innovations from Gallagher that make the system work include a patented design for continuous concentric wrapping of wide composite fabrics, and track-mounted orbital winders that move with the line and can be reloaded with fiber packages, without stopping production.
