Automated R&D System

A major recreational equipment manufacturer wanted a better way to test new formulations and processes under development for its next generation of products. Historically, when R&D programs were ready to test for performance and manufacturability, engineers would use one of the company’s full-scale manufacturing lines to make prototypes.

That process worked, but it was not very efficient.

It took production capacity off-line and it required significant reprograming and tooling for each prototype run. Furthermore, since they used a full production line, the R&D team ended up with many more prototypes than it needed for testing—a significant waste of materials.

Gallagher was engaged to develop a solution. Working from the general “wish list” specifications of the R&D team, Gallagher designed the short-run production system. It is fully automated and highly flexible.

Engineers can configure the system with a few key strokes and test different chemical formulations and process parameters. They can rapidly switch between programs, making small runs of different prototypes, with no impact on commercial production.
